About Us

Dyrhoff specialises in the design and supply of inflatable rubber dams and pneumatically-actuated spillway gates. The company has been involved in rubber dam business since 1989 and with spillway gate business since 1997. In 2003, Dyrhoff took over the Sumigate rubber dam business from the Japanese company, Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. At the time, Sumitomo Electric was the world’s leading manufacturer of inflatable rubber dams.

The Dyrhoff rubber dam is designed by Dyrhoff in the UK using design know-how acquired from Sumitomo Electric. All the rubber dam components are designed and manufactured according to the Japanese Technical Standards for inflatable rubber dams.

Dyrhoff is also the main European agent for the Obermeyer Hydro pneumatic spillway gate. Dyrhoff supplies complete spillway gate systems according to Obermeyer Hydro’s design. Steel components for the spillway gate such as gate panels, abutment plates and steel embeds can be manufactured in house in the Dyrhoff workshop in Elverum, Norway or, depending on the location of the project, outsourced to local companies.

Dyrhoff can work on a supply-only or full-turnkey basis. Furthermore, Dyrhoff can supply all or part of the rubber dam or spillway gate system as required. Dyrhoff can give independent and impartial advice on the best type of gate system for a particular application or project location without being tied to a specific rubber dam or spillway gate manufacturer.

History

Before rubber dams

Dyrhoff’s history goes back to 1947 when Ing. Svein Dyrhoff set up a steel fabrication company in Norway. The company’s primary business was as a supplier of heating and ventilation products, a sector in which our Norwegian company continues to this day, but it also supplied components to other sectors, including the hydro-electric industry.

Sumitomo and Obermeyer agent

In 1989, Dyrhoff became the Scandinavian agent for Sumitomo Electric. Sumitomo was one of the world’s leading suppliers of rubber dams and Dyrhoff identified an opportunity to offer its Sumigate product to the hydroelectric market in the region. Dyrhoff supplied, installed and commissioned the first Sumitomo rubber dam in Scandinavia at the Orevann Power Plant in 1992.

In 1997, Dyrhoff became the European Agent for Obermeyer Hydro Inc., an American manufacturer of pneumatic spillway gates, supplying the first European Obermeyer spillway gate for the Denkpal Flood Diversion project in Hungary in the same year.

Independent rubber dam designer and supplier

From 2003 onwards, Dyrhoff took over the international Sumigate rubber dam business from Sumitomo Electric Industries meaning Dyrhoff was responsible for design, supply and management of all Sumitomo rubber dam projects outside Japan. In 2005, Dyrhoff set up a company in the UK (Dyrhoff Ltd) to focus on managing Sumitomo’s worldwide rubber dam business as well as promoting the Obermeyer spillway gate business in Europe.

As Sumitomo’s interest and involvement in rubber dam business waned, Dyrhoff developed relationships with other rubber manufacturers in Europe and the Far East to further develop its rubber dam business. In 2012, Sumitomo withdrew completely from the rubber dam market. Dyrhoff continued to develop the rubber dam and spillway gate business worldwide and established a subsidiary company in the USA in 2008.

Supplier of NoFloods products

In 2022, Dyrhoff signed an agreement with the Danish company Environment Solutions ApS to market and sell its range of NoFlood products in the UK market.
